Let's think about captions.
How many captions do you think are broadcast on television every single day?
News, information, variety, educational, historical, cultural, talk shows...
Captions appear in every program.
I believe that caption culture is particularly noteworthy in Japan.
To begin with,
Japan has a history of visual culture where people are familiar with movie subtitles.
"Subtitles" were introduced to help people enjoy watching glamorous English-language films.
While dubbing is becoming more mainstream now, originally, for foreign films, subtitles were the only option considered, except for some cases like foreign animation or children's movies. Foreign films were like a reward for educated people who could read.
I myself was finally able to watch foreign films with subtitles when I was in the upper elementary grades.
Bruce Lee's "Game of Death" remains my unforgettable first subtitled movie.
Now, about captions.
Since Japan has such a history, there's no resistance to captions in the first place. The environment was fully prepared to accept them.
Then came the caption revolution in television. That was "Susume! Denpa Shonen." (Go! Radio Wave Boys.)
This program started aggressively adding comment follow-ups.
The success of this program greatly influenced later television culture.
Certainly, if you convey information through both text and sound, it becomes much easier to understand. Even if the volume is turned down, you can probably still grasp the content.
Today, captions have escalated further, not only with comment follow-ups but also narration, tsukkomi (comedic retorts), side marks, and more, occupying almost all four corners of the screen.
In such times,
I really wish someone would do a statistical study for their summer break research project. Record one week of programming from commercial broadcasters and NHK, and investigate how the amount of captions changes by station and time slot. Wouldn't a detailed investigation yield interesting results?
